Would you like to make Sensory Rice but hate the lingering smell of vinegar or just cannot get the colours to come right with alcohol? We have a simple Sensory Rice recipe to make rainbow rice in 3 minutes today.
It is so much fun to make play recipes at home. I love to involve my kids so that they can learn more about what they are playing with. We came up with a super quick way to make sensory rice, recently. It involves just two ingredients plus the colour of your choice and it is amazing how you don’t have to wait for it to dry. I must warn you though: Because it is so simple, this process is a little addictive. 🙂
Dying rice requires either alcohol or vinegar and some colour. We have tried a few recipes in the past few months but each time we found that either the colours weren’t good enough or the smell was too strong. My almost three year old daughter is very sensitive to strong smells. I had almost given up on making sensory rice at home until this idea hit me.
We used Eskinol Facial Cleanser. It comes in a few different types but we used the lemon based one. Eskinol is an alcohol based facial cleanser with other ingredients. It is easily available in drug stores and most department stores where we live but you can order it on Amazon too, if you like. It has a light lemony smell that is refreshing and my children didn’t mind it. Since it is alcohol based and we added so little of it, we found that when we took it out of the bag, it was almost dry. I placed the rice on a tray while I worked the next colour and by the time we were done with all the colours, all of it was dry. My kids loved playing with it right away. The colours didn’t transfer and for once, my daughter didn’t mind the smell at all! In fact, she loved playing with it for a whole hour and she has been asking for it regularly since.
My children love the colours and the lemony smell that is so relaxing and refreshing. We have been having fun putting our hands in our new sensory bin. We have used it in plastic bottle to make a sensory rice discovery bottle with little items hidden inside too.
Here is how to make this beautiful rice.
What you need:
How to Make 3 Minute Sensory Rice without Alcohol or Vinegar:
- Add a pinch of food colour to 5ml of Eskinol and shake to mix. Keep aside.
- In a zipper bag, take a cup of rice. Add the Eskinol mix to the rice and mix it up by rubbing the rice in the bag. Dump it out on a flat tray. Leave it to dry to till you colour the next batch.
- Mix the differed coloured rice together in a bin.
We found that the Eskinol was so less that it didn’t need to be dried. It evaporated in just a few minutes. The rice was coloured and dry right out of the bag. We used it immediately to play and the colours did not stain our hands or any of the containers that we used.
